UAAP ends graduate transfer era: New rule in Season 90

UAAP has introduced a landmark rule change affecting graduate transfers, effective Season 90. Players who have completed their undergraduate degrees and transfer to another UAAP school must now sit out one year and have at least two years of remaining eligibility. The announcement, made by Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag during the Season 89 press conference, effectively ends the 'Troy Rike Rule' that previously allowed immediate eligibility. The old rule enabled many teams to instantly add experienced college graduates, with recent examples like Dom Escobar at Ateneo and Quentin Millora-Brown at UP benefiting from the pathway. By contrast, the new regulation forces teams to plan earlier, invest in in-house development, and place greater emphasis on school loyalty. While the decision is intended to promote campus culture and long-term player growth, it presents immediate challenges. Teams lose the ability to plug roster holes quickly, and some graduate players may choose to play elsewhere. However, the shift could level the playing field and incentivize investments in youth programs, ultimately strengthening Philippine collegiate basketball. As Season 90 approaches, all UAAP teams must adapt their recruitment strategies and embrace a longer-term perspective, potentially engaging in more strategic planning and development of homegrown talent.
