Since the 11th century, Vyšehrad played a significant role during siege of Prague. The emperor Charles IV built Vyšehrad as a symbol of the royal power and support against increasing power of Czech towns. Casemates are the unique monument built in the middle of the 18th century, at the time of occupation of Vyšehrad by French army. Gorlice hall of the area of 330 m2 and height of 13 metres is the largest underground hall in Prague. You will find there original statues that used to decorate the Charles Bridge. The statue of St. Vojtěch created by F. M. Brokof and the statues of St. Ludmila with little Wenceslas created by M. B. Braun belong to jewels of Czech Baroque sculpture.
