Vyšehrad

The national cultural monument Vyšehrad is a place creating a part of the Czech oldest history. It was the venue of legends and myth that became the source for several generations of writers, music composers and painters. Already at the beginning of the second millennium, Vyšehrad became the seat of Czech princes and Boleslav II arranged for production of Přemyslids deniers in the local mint already around 950. Vyšehrad was also the seat of Vratislav II, Czech and Polish king from 1085, and the emperor Charles IV contributed to its further blossom by building the Gothic royal palace, canonry church and grandiose gate called Špička.
Within the extensive complex of Vyšehrad, you will find over three tens of buildings having extraordinary historical importance. The Romanesque Rotunda of St. Martin is probably the oldest Romanesque structure in Prague. Do not forget to visit the national Slavín Cemetery located next to the church. It is a unique art unit and it is the final resting place of 600 significant personalities involved in Czech science and culture.
