Terezín

The town of Terezín was built as a fortress in the second half of the 18th century by Emperor Josef II and bears the name of his mother, the Empress Marie Terezie. The history of the Town was tragically marked during World War II, when a Jewish ghetto was established here, and 150,000 Jews were interned in it. These were then gradually deported to extermination concentration camps. The so-called Small Fort was used for interning Czech patriots during World War II and became a place of suffering and death of thousands of victims of the fascist régime. Today, Terezín is a National Memorial of the victims of fascism.
