Karlštejn Castle

The Karlštejn Castle together with the Prague Castle form the symbol of the Czech Statehood and its most significant national monument. Emperor Charles IV founded the Castle in the year 1348. Originally, it served mainly for the protection of the crown jewels of Roman Emperors and Czech Kings and the safekeeping of Holy Relics, which Charles IV gained during his long reign. To date, the Castle chambers hold relics of immense historic and artistic value. The collection of 129 paintings of Master Theodorik that decorate the Chapel of the Holy Cross rank among the most beautiful and most valuable Gothic paintings in Europe.
